First Things First
It was obvious to me as 2026 began that my word for the year was first.
My desire is to start each day in quiet and have my first thoughts rest in God’s loving presence. I’m not naturally a routine or disciplined person. I tend to chase the next adventure and resist anything that feels restrictive. I like to keep my options open. But putting something first means everything else comes second.
What I’m learning (ever so slowly) is this: what holds my attention shapes my life. We become what we behold. My first priority ends up defining me. Noticing where my mind naturally goes when I slow down is the key. My Spiritual Director put it this way, “pay attention to what you are paying attention to”.
When I pay attention I begin to notice:
When hurry is present, God feels distant.
When prayer feels like a task instead of a conversation.
When I scroll before silence.
When I’m productive but not peaceful.
One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling…
Psalm 27:4-5
One thing. Not fifty priorities. Not more doing, but seeking, dwelling, and resting.
Putting God first. It’s about small, steady attention: silence before screens, a slow walk with God, a whispered prayer, a Sabbath rhythm.
Not bigger, better, stronger, faster, but first things first.
Maybe the better question this year isn’t what should I accomplish?
Maybe it’s what gets my first attention?
If you are ready to put first things first join me in this prayer:
Lord, gather my scattered attention.
Slow my hurry.
Teach me to begin with You.
Be my first love, not my last resort.
Amen.
